This magnificent
listed building is believed to have originally been a Saxon
barn and dates back over 1000 years. In the 19th century is
was substantially altered to form a grand dining hall for the
adjacent Newton Manor House. It is now in a residential area
about a mile from the centre of Swanage with its lovely sandy
beach. This small resort has many pubs, restaurants,
interesting shops and a small theatre. The Swanage Steam
Railway runs through beautiful countryside to the ruins of
Corfe Castle. All around the Purbeck area there are excellent
country walks over the hills and heaths and including the
South West Coast Path and the Purbeck Way. The Hall can be
booked with Newton Manor and when the two are booked together
the furniture in The Hall can be rearranged to form a grand
dining area. Ground Floor The property is entered through an ancient coach house that provides off street parking for two cars. There is a lovely landscaped walled garden including lawn area. The property is entered up three steps and through carved 17th century double doors giving access to the hall. This remains the principle room of this accommodation measuring a stunning forty-four feet by twenty feet. A large rectangular bay with stone mullioned windows overlooks the garden and there is a stone inglenook fireplace with large wood burning stove. This room includes the dining area and lounge area with TV and video. An ancient cupola tops the high vaulted ceiling of the hall. There is a large well-fitted and modernised kitchen with porcelain butler sink and a gas fired Rayburn as well as a modern cooker. It has a beamed ceiling stone mullion window and a breakfast area.
First Floor From the kitchen a steep staircase winds to a
bedroom with twin beds and a WC/Shower room. A main staircase
rises from the hall to a high galleried landing giving access
to two further
bedrooms and a bathroom. Both bedrooms have semi-vaulted
beamed ceilings one being a double with five foot bed and TV
and the other having twin beds. |
